ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – Delta County is one step closer to having a dog park at the Delta County Airport in Escanaba.
At a recent meeting of the Escanaba Recreation Advisory Board a decision was made to begin drafting a lease agreement with the airport for use of the property.
The dog park will occupy just over 3 acres of land at the airport with 1 acre used for large breed dogs and a half acre for smaller breeds.
The city has $17,000 in place to cover the cost of building the park.
$12,000 have come from a local anonymous donor while the other $5,000 was acquired through what’s called, a prosperous places grant.
Delta Fence has agreed to oversee the construction which will largely be completed by a group of approximately 60 volunteers.
Right now the project is waiting on approval of a permit from the FAA due to the park’s location.
Kim Peterson is the director of Escanaba’s Recreation Department and she says the city is hoping the FAA is quick in their approval of the project.
“That could take up to 60 days so hopefully it will take a little bit less and we get that done and we can start the dog park this fall still. If not, we’re hopeful that we’ll get everything in place and get it all ready for the spring and we’ll construct the dog park in spring of 2019”.
